VANCOUVER, CANADA
I love that picture. I just happened to show up in Vancouver’s Chinatown a few days before the sixtieth anniversary of China’s independence from… well, nobody knows, but on October 1st, 1949 Mao Zedong stood up in Beijing and announced the formation of the People’s Republic of China. I’m not sure how many Taiwanese there are in Vancouver, but I can’t imagine they were very happy about their fellow Chinese celebrating the triumph of communism in their adopted streets.
But there were dragons! And gongs! And pickup trucks with loudspeakers! High five!
